QUESTIONS ABOUT GLOW LIGHT STICKS:
1. What makes the glow light products glow?
Chemical glow light products are all very similar. Each product is composed of a flexible outer casing typically made of plastic. Inside the casing are a chemical fluid and a fluorescent dye. Also inside the casing, floating in this fluid is a thin walled glass ampoule. The glass ampoule typically contains a hydrogen peroxide solution. The hydrogen peroxide mix is stored inside the glass ampoule in order to keep it from mixing with the rest of the liquid chemicals and starting the light producing reaction. When you are ready to activate the glow product, you gently bend the plastic casing until you hear the glass ampoule break or "snap". This allows the two chemical solutions to mix and the glowing light begins. Gently shake in order to mix the chemicals thoroughly. 2. What is the history of Chemiluminescence and its importance?
Chemiluminescence is the process whereby energy from a chemical reaction is released directly as light without the involvement of heat or flame. The most common example of this process is the bioluminescence of the firefly. Glow light sticks are the result of years of research trying to copy the firefly!
The main importance of chemiluminescence is in the fact that it is a cold system. Energy in the form of light is produced directly from the chemical reaction without first going through an intermediate stage involving heat. An example of the type of system also involving heat would be a light bulb (incandescence). In a light bulb, some of the electrical energy is converted to light, but much more of it is converted to heat! Chemiluminescent glow products never heat up, are not a source of ignition, and are non-flammable. This is why modern science wished to copy the firefly! Glow products have an abundance of uses as a cold, portable, light source and are an excellent source of SAFE FUN. They are also waterproof, and can be used in rain or underwater as a light source for diving.
3. How safe are Chemical Glow products?
All chemiluminescent glow products sold by Glowspace.com are very safe when used in a responsible manner. As mentioned above, all of the liquid chemicals are stored safely inside a durable plastic outer casing. You should never intentionally rupture the plastic casing of a glow product, because if it has been activated, it will contain small pieces of broken glass that could be harmful. However, if the liquid chemicals do leak out for any reason, they are considered non-toxic and non-flammable. If the chemicals come into contact with the skin, wash with soap and water. Chemical contact with eyes will cause temporary discomfort similar to soap, and should be flushed with clean water immediately. Also, many products offered by Glowspace.com contain small parts and could be a choking hazard. They are not recommended for children under 5 years of age without adult supervision. (These products provide great fun, but you don't want your children chewing on them!) As well, the chemical contents could stain clothing, furniture, carpeting, and upholstery - wash immediately with warm soapy water.
The bottom line is this: under normal, responsible use, glow products are safe, and will provide many hours of enjoyment!
4. How do temperature and other factors affect the light intensity?
In an environment of constant room temperature, once activated, a glow product will quickly reach its peak light producing capability and slowly get dimmer from then on over the course of its designed lifetime. Most glow products have a rated lifetime of at least 4 to 8 hours or longer, but some "high intensity" products such as the 6 inch High Intensity stick will be really bright for the first 30 minutes then quickly diminish in luminosity, much faster than a regular 6 inch stick. Brightness and lifetime are both governed by the proportion and strength of the chemical contents.
All chemical glow products are also affected by temperature. The warmer the environment, the brighter a glow light product will become, but the faster it will be used up. The converse is also true. In a colder environment, the glow light product won't be as bright, but it will last much longer. We can use this fact to our benefit however! After the glow product is activated, the chemical reaction cannot be stopped. When the activated light stick is placed in the freezer, however, the chemical reaction is almost suspended or "frozen", allowing us to get one more use from it when we take it back out! This technique works well for necklaces, bracelets, and small light sticks, but doesn't work as well for big light sticks. Your kids will love it when you "thaw" out their partially used glow products and they start glowing again! This method isn't guaranteed, but works in most cases, especially when the glow light product is still very bright when first "frozen".
5. What is the shelf life of new glow light products?
All of the glow products sold by Glowspace.com are factory fresh, and sealed in a foil bag or pouch, or in a cardboard tube. The airtight foil wrapping is necessary because high humidity, heat, and direct sunlight will diminish the shelf life of glow products. By storing your glow products in a cool dry place in their original, unopened foil package or tubes, they should last for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 4 years. Necklaces and bracelets are especially fragile, and should be stored in their original packages or tubes until ready to use in order to avoid unintentional activation.
6. What are the brightest glow light colors?
In our opinion, the brightest glow colors are green and blue followed by yellow, orange, pink and red.
7. How are the glow light products activated?
First, remove the glow light stick from its foil packaging. Next, gently bend the glow light stick until the inner glass capsule breaks or "snaps" and the glowing reaction begins. Finally, shake the light stick a few times to mix the chemicals and produce an even glow. For necklaces and bracelets, remove them from their packaging, and then gently bend along their entire length until the chemicals mix and start glowing.
